How to get to Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel
The easiest way to get to Mackinac Island and The Grand Hotel is by ferry. Ferries to Mackinac Island can be accessed by driving to Mackinaw City (on Michigan’s lower peninsula).  We include the Ferry Ticket and will use Shepler’s Ferry service from Mackinaw City. We will also pay for your overnight parking for al four nights as part of your SFGA Trip Package.  The boats operate from early morning until early evening, with frequent crossings throughout the day. Luggage transfer is simple and convenient, with assistance provided on both the mainland and on Mackinac Island. AS cars are not allowed on Mackinac Island, ample parking is available at all mainland ferry docks. It’s a short walk from the ferry docks to Grand Hotel. Your luggage will be transported to the Grand Hotel by the dock porters.

Luggage
When you arrive by ferry, luggage transfer is simple and convenient. After checking in your luggage with the ferry service on the mainland, your luggage will be tagged and delivered directly to your hotel room. Upon check-in, present your luggage tags at the front desk. Please note that your luggage may take up to two hours to get to the hotel from the dock. If you are arriving close to 6:00 p.m. you may want to bring your evening wear with you to the hotel. For your return trip back to the mainland, follow the in-room instructions. Your luggage will be tagged and transferred from your room to a secure location on the appropriate mainland dock. We request at least a two-hour window for the transfer.

Getting to the Grand Hotel from the boat docks.
Grand Hotel is a 15-20 minute walk from the boat docks. For your convenience, Grand Hotel operates horse-drawn carriages between the docks and Grand Hotel. As with all taxi service on Mackinac Island, there is a $5.00 per person fee and seats are on a first come, first served basis. We cannot guarantee Grand Hotel carriages will meet all ferry boats, nor can we guarantee seats for all Grand Hotel guests.

The Grand Hotel has Astor’s Salon and Spa. Located inside the hotel on the lower level, our Grand Hotel salon features Aveda products and techniques. A variety of hair styling, facial and body treatments are available.

Dress policy?
Grand Hotel is a resort and they want you to feel at ease and dress comfortably during the day in casual resort attire, they do ask that guests refrain from wearing halter tops, tank tops or cut-off shorts.  Evening wear is required in all areas of the hotel after 6:30 p.m. except the Cupola Bar.  Evening wear for ladies includes dresses, skirt and blouse, or pantsuit; and for gentlemen a suit or sport coat, necktie and dress slacks; no denim in the evening please.

Treetops Resort has no dress policies. We are hosting two receptions and group dinners at Treetops as part of your trip package. The recommended dress for these events is "resort casual".

After four nights amongst the scenic views and manicured fairways, grab your life jackets because we’re hoping aboard the ferry boat for The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island to be pampered for a while. The Grand Hotel has a long and rich history of providing high level services and culinary experiences. Our stay will include daily breakfasts and dinners (dinner jackets and ties required), two afternoon teas and two rounds of golf on the resort's unique Jewel Golf Course.

People often talk about how things were in the "good old days", well here is your chance to experience the "good old days" for yourself! Once you step off the ferry onto Mackinac Island you are presented with three options for transportation, walking, bicycles or horse-drawn carriages. (No cars allowed on Mackinac Island!) You'll step back to an era of dining to chamber music, Afternoon Tea in the Parlor, croquet on an endless lawn, and dancing the evening away. Enjoy a long list of modern amenities, 18 holes of golf, shopping, Astor's Salon and Spa, or sitting in a rocking chair on the world’s longest porch enjoying the views of the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge. All of The Grand Hotel's 386 guestrooms are uniquely decorated by New York Interior Designer, Carleton Varney of Dorothy Draper and Company and our SFGA participants will stay in upgraded Lake View rooms.  We do hope you'll join us on this unique SFGA Northern Michigan Golf Adventure.

Treetops Resort is an award winning golf destination boasting 81 holes of golf on spectacular terrain totaling five award-winning courses inspired and professionally designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Tom Fazio, and Rick Smith. Treetops Resort is also proudly recognized as having the #1 Par 3 Course in North America: Threetops.

Jones Masterpiece Golf Course - When Masterpiece opened in 1987, Golf Digest named it the second-best new course in the country. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed it with deep ravines, plentiful sand traps, tough pin placements, numerous water hazards, and constant elevation changes. The Masterpiece is widely considered the most challenging course at Treetops; some say it’s the most challenging in Michigan. Take time on each green to look back at the fairway, as this course is almost as beautiful backwards as it is forward. In fact, RTJ, Sr. drafted a design that routed this course in the exact reverse of what you see today.

Smith Signature Golf Course - Rick Smith has achieved great success in golf as a teacher, designer and communicator. He is regarded as one of the PGA Tour’s best sounding boards for swing advice.  and in 2009, Rick was ranked as the number two golf instructor in the world by PGA Tour players and since 2000, Rick has been consistently ranked as one of the top ten golf instructors in the world; both polls were done by Golf Digest Magazine. Now this is one fellow who knows the game of golf! That is why Treetops brought in the Michigan Golf Hall of Famer and Michigan Golf Ambassador to design three of their courses. His Signature Course may be the most spectacular of all the layouts at Treetops.  With sloping mounds and narrow fairways, the Signature will keep our whole group on their toes. This course is the perfect blend between modern design and the greatest classic designs from across the globe. In fact, Smith prepared to build this course (his first 18-hole design) with a month-long trip to Ireland and Scotland to study the greatest designs in the world. Play the Signature and you’ll see plenty of these characteristics.

Smith Threetops Par 3 Course - Treetops’ nine-hole par 3 course is the first course ever designed by Rick Smith, who has gone on to design some of the best in the country. Why wouldn’t that be the case, as Threetops is also widely recognized by multiple publications as the #1 par 3 course in the country, and for good reason. Keep that camera handy because photo-worthy vistas are the rule, not the exception. This is such a wonderful and fun course that we will use as one of our competitive rounds and go around the 9 hole track twice to make it an 18 hole competition!

SFGA participants will play the three courses listed above when we visit Treetops Resort. Sadly we won't have time to play the Tom Fazio designed Premier Course or the Rick Smith designed Tradition Course. However, if you would like to play these courses, Treetops has offered an early arrival room rate available to anyone who may like to arrive a day or two early.

The Treetops Lodge features a lobby with comfortable sitting areas is a nice place to meet up with follow golfers. The Lodge also houses the Candy Bar 81 where you can always watch the current sporting event of the day and enjoy your favorite beverage. You’ll also find a gift shop, indoor/outdoor swimming pool and hot tubs, fitness center and the Treetops Spa at the Treetops Lodge. Your room will be just a short walk away from the Golf Academy & Activity Center, the Inn and the Convention Center. Also within walkable distance are the Jones Driving Range, Pro Shop and Jones Masterpiece Golf Course.
Our SFGA participants will stay in Deluxe King Lodge Rooms. These are spacious at over 500 square feet and include King size bed, a sitting area, coffee/tea maker, refrigerator and microwave in each room.

Tentative Itinerary:

At Grand Hotel, no two of the 385 guest rooms are alike.  Each guest room has been tastefully decorated by New York designer Carleton Varney in its own special character and style, complete with numerous amenities including individually controlled AC, mini bar, in-room safe, cable TV, iron and coffee maker. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and resort grounds. Guest room amenities include complementary geranium-scented shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and hand and body soap. The flower, which thrives in Mackinac’s temperate climate, has been gracing Grand Hotel’s front porch since the 1920’s. Decorator Carleton Varney has incorporated the geranium into the hotel’s furnishings, most notably in the Main Parlor’s carpeting. Our SFGA participants will stay in Lake View Rooms. Located at the east end of Grand Hotel, the Lake View accommodations are the best rooms to see the horse carriages and bicycles strolling by. Featuring beautiful views of Lake Huron and The Jewel Golf Course, each room is uniquely designed with modern amenities and plenty of natural lighting.

Treetops Golf Resort and The Grand Hotel

Gaylord and Mackinac Island, Michigan

August 10 -18, 2023

Northern Michigan is one of America's most popular summer golf destinations with average highs in the mid-70's to low 80's and low humidity. If you’re looking for a place to escape the summertime heat, your search may be over. The SFGA has organized a golfer’s dream adventure which combines (2) nearby, yet very unique destinations in the fantastic region known as Northern Michigan.

Our trip begins with rounds on the highly rated courses (Golf Digest 4.5 stars) of the Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan. Robert Trent Jones, Tom Fazio and Rick Smith have created an 81 hole buffet of golf at Treetops Resort. The dense hardwood forests, pristine lakes and rolling hills of Gaylord, MI are where Jones, Fazio and Smith built what has become known as the crown jewel of Gaylord's Golf Mecca. We'll spend four nights and play three of Michigan's top courses. You'll enjoy the usual inclusions like spacious rooms, daily breakfast, welcome and awards receptions followed by group dinners. You'll also have free afternoons to visit nearby shops, taverns and restaurants in Gaylord.

The Jewel Golf Course is one of the most unique courses in the United States. Enjoy the scenic beauty of Mackinac Island, lush landscaping and meticulously manicured tees, fairways and greens. The Grand nine is located across the street from the hotel, with views of Lake Huron and Round Island. The Woods nine is set in the interior of Mackinac Island, with views of the Mackinac Bridge and the Upper Peninsula.  After completing the Grand nine, you and your clubs will be transported via horse-drawn carriage a mile and a half to the Woods nine. The leisurely 15-minute ride includes parts of the island unseen by many visitors.  The Grand nine was built in 1901 and redesigned in 1987 by golf course architect Jerry Matthews. He also designed the Woods nine, added in 1994.
In addition to the two practice putting areas, the Grand nine of The Jewel now has a driving range net that can accommodate up to four players at a time to help warm up before your round and refine your skills.  Use of the driving range net is included when paying greens fees to play The Jewel.
