Omni Tucson National's Sonoran Course

Sewailo Golf Club

We'll stay in the Omni Tucson National's upgraded Premier Guest Rooms, considered to be among  the most luxurious in the greater Tucson area.  These spacious 675 (sqft) guest rooms received an extensive renovation completed in early 2023. Private terraces or balconies add an intriguing outdoor element to each room with breathtaking views of the manicured golf course and scenic mountains. Tiled floors and luxurious master bathrooms complement the relaxed ambiance. Premier Mountain Vista or Golf View Rooms are within walking distance to the Spa, Golf Club, Reception and an array of restaurants and entertainment venues.

The Tucson Food Scene is Outstanding! Plenty of cities have great places to eat or go out for a drink, but what makes Tucson different is the fusion of cultures found only in Southern Arizona. Native ingredients grown by indigenous peoples in the region for thousands of years led the city to be designated as the first UNESCO City of Gastronomy in the country. Mexican culture is at the core of the local art and music scene and has allowed Tucson to become the undisputed Mexican Food capital of the United States. Mind-blowing flavors from across the globe have landed in Tucson through the many Refugees who have made this welcoming community their home.  The other key ingredient to Tucson's flavor profile is the land itself. The special nature of the Sonoran Desert comes through with every sip and every bite. Try mesquite-smoked whiskey, chile spiced coffee, prickly pear glazed ribs, or bread, pasta, and pastries made from native seeds and grains. When you go to a restaurant or go out for a drink in Tucson, you know exactly where you are.   From the authentic Mexican spots, Sonoran Hot Dog stands, and taco trucks to the Chef-driven, farm-to-table restaurants and upscale steak houses, the Tucson food scene is sure to please your palate!

The Sun and Fun Golf Association has not been to Arizona since 2010 when we spent a week in Tubac, about an hour south of Tucson. This time we are returning to southern Arizona, but we'll spend the week in Tucson and we'll stay at the award winning Omni Tucson National Resort. We are excited about this trip because the Omni Tucson National is recently renovated, upscale resort that really knows how to cater to golfers! It all starts with two excellent 18-hole championship golf courses. The Sonoran, a desert course featuring great views of the mountains and the city. And the Catalina Course, venue to over 30 PGA tour events and most recently home to the 2023 PGA TOUR Champions Event, The Cologuard Classic. We'll also play two rounds at the nearby Sewailo Golf Club and Skyline Country Club (a private club). When we're not golfing you'll have free time to enjoy the resort amenities and/or explore Tucson. And what would a trip to the Wild West be without a visit to a wild west town? We'll visit and explore Tombstone, the legendary town of Wyatt Earp and the O.K. Corral. The spring weather in southern Arizona is ideal and the courses should be in fantastic shape. This will be a trip you won't want to miss so register today!

Omni Tucson National Catalina Course: This is your chance to play on a favorite course of the PGA Tour.  With a parkland-style layout and plenty of water hazards, this desert oasis is steeped in both history and beauty. The Catalina Course was home to the PGA Tour’s Tucson Open 30 times from 1965 through 2006. Jack Nicklaus was the touring pro when the course opened in 1963. Arnold Palmer won there in 1967, Trevino had back-to-back wins (1969-70), Johnny Miller won three consecutive times (1974-76), and Phil Mickelson earned two of his three Tucson Open wins on the course (1995-96). Hosts have included Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, and Joe Garagiola.  PGA TOUR Champions Event, The Cologuard Classic most recently took place on the Catalina Course March 3-5, 2023, with David Toms winning by one shot over Robert Karlsson and a strong field that included Steve Stricker, Brett Quigley, Miguel Angel Jimenez (2022 Cologuard Champion), Bernhard Langer (2020 Cologuard Champion) and Jerry Kelly (Tournament Ambassador), Tom Lehman, Mark O’Meara and more.

Sewailo Golf Club: If you love golf, Tucson’s Sewailo Golf Club is your course. Created by Native American former PGA Tour professional and golf course designer, Notah Begay III and Ty Butler. Sewailo, meaning “Land where the flowers grow” in the Pascua Yaqui language, blends the native landscape of Tucson with picturesque lakes and streams. This challenging course measures 7,400 yards from the championship tees, with 5 different tee boxes on each hole to allow for players of all abilities. It’s a Tucson golf experience you’ll never forget.

Things to do in Tucson

The Mount Lemmon Scenic Byway: Widely regarded as one of the most scenic drives in the southwest, you can enjoy a 27 mile drive up Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway that is full of pullouts with amazing vistas. It's always high on the list of things to do when visiting Tucson.
At the top is a ski resort, observatory, and small town of Summerhaven. It takes two to three hours and provides access to a fascinating land of desert & mountain vistas, outlandish rockscapes, cool mountain forests and deep canyons spilling out onto broad deserts. You’ll notice a drastic drop in temperature as you make your way up the mountain, and depending on the time of year, you may even start to see snow (a crazy sight when you’re coming from the desert!). Take advantage of the scenic overlooks and rest areas for panoramic photos or by bringing along a picnic. If you'd like to hike any part of your journey, you can find several trail options on the U.S. Forest Service website.

Omni Tucson National Sonoran Course: Designed by former World #1 Ranked Golfer and winner of 35 Professional Tournaments, Tom Lehman, the Sonoran course opened in December 2005 to enthusiastic reviews. This desert-style layout features steep elevation changes and some unusual uphill/downhill shot opportunities not typically found in Tucson. The Sonoran offers spectacular vistas of natural beauty of the surrounding terrain. This desert-style course features two lakes and 69 bunkers, Tifway 419 pollen-free Bermuda in fairways & tees and the greens feature Mini Verde Bermuda. The course is always in great shape and is a terrific venue for our Arizona Golf Adventure.

Tombstone Tour

Omni Tucson National's Catalina Course

El Conquistador Country Club

We will step back in time and enjoy the Old West Atmosphere of the “Town Too Tough To Die!”, Tombstone, Arizona. We'll walk the same streets where Wyatt Earp and his brothers enjoyed the company of the likes of Doc Holliday. Step inside the historic buildings where a game of Poker would have called to the weary miner or even inside the silver mine where that precious dollar was once earned! Stand where the legendary stories of the past actually occurred and encapsulate yourself in authentic Wild West History!
Our visit will offer a glimpse into the past with historic attractions such as museums, history tours, underground mine experiences, paranormal adventures, shopping, dining and of course gunfight reenactments. It will all be planned out and will even include lunch in the Longhorn Restaurant. The Longhorn Restaurant is the oldest continually operated restaurant in Tombstone. An historical building, The Longhorn is located in what used to be the Bucket of Blood Saloon, the Holiday Water Company, and the Owl Cafe and Hotel. Virgil Earp was shot from the second floor of this historic venue.  Interestingly enough, they also are known for serving the Best Burger in the West!
