Our Lucaya Reef Village Resort
Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas

We completed our first trip of 2010 what a trip it was! First I would like to thank all those who participated in the event. I think this was our most ambitious trip since I’ve been running the SFGA. We stayed at the Comfort Inn Cruise Port near Port Everglades on the first night. The following morning we took buses to the Cruise Port and boarded the Discovery Cruise Ship for our five hour trip to Grand Bahama Island. The weather was sunny & warm, ideal for sailing. Once we arrived at Grand Bahama Island we boarded vans bound for the Our Lucaya Reef Village Resort. After we all checked in to our ocean view rooms we had time to explore the resort’s 7.5 acres of sandy beaches, sparkling blue waters and tropical surroundings. Then that night we got to know one another during a cocktail reception followed by a delicious Welcome Dinner.

The weather cooperated beautifully the first four days of our trip and we were able to complete all three rounds of tournament golf without a hitch. The first day was on the Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed Reef Golf Course. We played a “One best ball of Four” team format with the team of George Deriso, Ed Myers, Lois Scoppettuolo and Claudia Campbell carding a 55, beating the second place team by one shot. The next day we had new teams and played the longer and narrower Lucaya Course, the format was “Two best ball of Four” team competition. Our winning team had Jeff & Betty McMillion and Ray Galligan & Jana Stone shoot a net 133. The second place team finished two shots back and was helped by Richard Lewis’ eagle on the par 5 number 12 hole, good job Richard! Our final day of golf was back on the Reef Course and we mixed the pairings once again. Roger & Hanne Lewis and Ed Myers & Erma Hawley ran away with this one day competition, shooting a 124 and winning by five shots. Congratulations go out to all our participants!

In addition to the accommodations, golf and transportation, our package included all meals and drinks while on the cruise ship and at the resort, so we had plenty to eat & drink. S.F.G.A. hopes to return to the Our Lucaya Reef Village Resort in the future and enjoy the Bahemian culture and beauty soon.
