Jekyll Island Club Hotel
Jekyll Island, Georgia
CONCLUDED
November 8 - 11, 2011
First I would like to thank all those who participated in this wonderful event. Over the course of 4 days and 3 nights it felt like we had stepped back in time as we enjoyed the Jekyll Island Club which was once a private retreat for America’s wealthiest families. Today the club lives on as a National Historic Landmark and has been restored as a stellar resort destination. Club members such as Morgan, Rockefeller, Pulitzer and Vanderbilt wintered there at the turn of the century … and last week at Jekyll Island Club Hotel, it was our turn.
We experienced top-notch amenities, service and cuisine. Our rooms were spacious and updated with all the modern furnishings you would expect without losing any of the historic touches such as the double crown moldings, eight foot doors, ten foot ceilings, and some rooms even had fireplaces with ornately decorated mantle casings. Our meals were excellent and it all started with the ambiance. The resort must spend thousands of dollars each year on all the fresh cut rose arrangements that are used as decorations on all the dining room tables and throughout the resort to add beauty and distinction to the historic surroundings.
The resort was an experience in and of itself but we were there for the golf and played three rounds of golf on three different courses, Great Dunes, Pine Lakes, and Oleander, with three different formats. We were fortunate enough to play all three rounds without rain. In fact the weather was perfect, sunny and warm, except for the last morning when it was a bit chilly. But by mid-round the sun had warmed the cool air and it was once again ideal for golf. All three courses are what I would call “classic golf design,” they are fairly flat layouts through woodlands and marsh with lots of doglegs, mostly tree-lined with well placed bunkers and all three were in good shape. One thing about these courses that I really enjoyed was the fact that there are no houses lining the fairways. When you play these links you see a natural environment with lots of wildlife, birds, deer, gators and more. You won’t find large rock formations with cascading waterfalls and a large multimillion dollar club house. This was traditional golf which fit in perfectly with the historic surroundings of Jekyll Island.
Our next event will be held just north of Orlando at Mission Inn in Howey-In-The-Hills, FL March 18-21, 2012. Mission Inn has recently renovated their guest rooms and our outings there have always been very popular. Mission Inn features 36 holes of “Championship Golf” and has been nominated for “Best Resort Course” in Florida by Golf Digest. Trip information, registration form and resort brochure for this event will be sent out in a couple weeks.
Sincerely,
Scott Doane
